Salford City Reds
We have formed a wide-ranging partnership with Salford City Reds, one of the North West's top Rugby League teams with players such as Philip Leuluai, Lee Jewitt and Karl Fitzpatrick.
Head of Sport, Phil Graham-Smith says: "One of the most enjoyable sides of this partnership comes from both Salford City Reds and the University going into schools and colleges to promote rugby league, healthy living as well as inspiring pupils to aim higher.
Fitness testing
Sports Science graduate, Chris Bamber, has recently been appointed Sports Science Partnership Officer. His role is to co-ordinate fitness testing of the Salford Reds academy and first team squads, to provide match analysis at each game and to liase with staff in the podiatry and sports injury clinic to provide more in-depth assessments and services such as:
- Isokinetic muscle function
- Gait analysis
- The production of custom-made orthoses.
A great deal for students
Students undertaking Applied Sports Science, Strength and Conditioning, and Sports Rehabilitation all have direct access to working with players from academy through to first team on a regular basis, either as part of a work placement or embedded within modules on the course.
The benefit to Salford Reds
Our expert in Strength & Conditioning, Paul Comfort, has been appointed to the role of Head of Sports Science at Salford City Reds. In addition to teaching, Paul works alongside the coaching staff to identify areas in which sports science and rehabilitation can be implemented to the benefit of individual players and the team.
"It's a fantastic opportunity to put theory into practice and to see how this impacts on players’ fitness, reduction in injuries and overall game performance."
